Shovel-ready: GAPS breaks ground on new school

When it’s completed in fall 2019, Albany’s newest elementary school will be able to hold up to 600 students. The 90,000-square-foot building will be “light and bright,” with a two-story classroom wing, two gyms, a commons, a media center and a covered play area. It will be secure while both allowing for and encouraging access for public use.

Albany’s newest elementary school will be under budget even with a covered play area, extra classrooms and an auxiliary gym. That’s the word from officials with Greater Albany Public Schools, who brought a contract proposal Monday to the Albany School Board for approval.

The overall budget is still being determined by the insurance company based on required code upgrades, but Miller said the final number should reach about $4 million after soft costs for items like design are considered. The HMK Company project management team from Salem and gLAs Architects are currently working to complete the bid packages for both the site work and the prefabricated metal building.

 Extra bond funds made possible by premium sales will pay for expanded capacity at Oak Grove and Albany’s new elementary school, the Albany School Board has decided. Board members agreed Monday to spend $13.5 million of the extra $28 million received in premium bond sales to do work at both schools.

The Winston Dillard School District Board of Education held a special work session Wednesday to discuss possible outcomes for the Lookingglass Elementary School fire that destroyed the school’s gymnasium on Dec. 27. Managing Director David McKay from HMK Project Management Company in Salem presented the board with three possible options to recover from the fire.

Earlier this week, McKay met with a regional environmental specialist from the Department of Environmental Quality to walk the site. McKay laid out the cleanup plan and the DEQ representative agreed to it.
